Laser Eye Treatment
Laser eye treatment uses laser technology to reshape the cornea and correct certain refractive errors. It may be considered for people with myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness) or astigmatism who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The appropriate treatment depends on the patient’s prescription, corneal structure, eye health and individual expectations.
Several laser techniques are available, including LASIK, PRK and SMILE. During LASIK, a thin corneal flap is created and the underlying tissue is reshaped with a laser before the flap is repositioned. In PRK, the surface epithelial layer is removed so that the underlying cornea can be reshaped; the epithelium then regenerates during recovery. SMILE uses a small incision to remove a precisely shaped piece of corneal tissue. Not every technique is suitable for every patient.
Laser eye procedures are generally performed using anaesthetic eye drops. Sensations during and after treatment, as well as recovery time, vary according to the procedure and the individual. Temporary blurred vision, glare, halos, light sensitivity, dry-eye symptoms or discomfort may occur during recovery. Patients should follow all hygiene, medication and aftercare instructions provided by their ophthalmologist.
Visual outcomes differ from person to person. Many suitable patients experience a substantial reduction in their need for glasses or contact lenses, but glasses may still be required for some activities or later in life. Age-related changes, including presbyopia, can continue to affect vision after laser treatment.
A comprehensive eye examination is necessary before deciding on laser treatment. This assessment includes the refractive error, corneal thickness and shape, tear-film health and other clinical factors. The ophthalmologist can then discuss suitability, expected benefits, limitations, possible risks and the most appropriate treatment option for the individual patient.
